Ex-professionals compete for the kids

The GC Schwarze Heide hosts the 2nd Gofus Team Challenge on 29.09.2020.

Dorsten, September 24, 2020. The playground on Leibnitzstrasse has seen better days. The playground equipment has been used up, the overall picture is not very inviting. But not for long. Because on Monday, former professional soccer players will once again line up at m GC Schwarze Heide for the tee shot. At the 2nd Gofus Team-Challenge, money will be raised for the project "Platz da". Among other things, it will be used for the playground in the Boy.

"We are close to setting another milestone," says Olaf Thon. The former professional footballer from Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich has been working for the golfing footballers, the Gofus, since the very first hour in 2001, "we want to complete our 200th project this year. By projects, Thon means the renovation of football fields and playgrounds. Since their inception, the golfing soccer players have collected more than seven million euros for the "Platz da" campaign.

The fact that the 1990 world champion himself will be teeing off at GC Schwarze Heide on Monday is almost a matter of course for the Ruhr Valley icon. "The project is very close to my heart. The money and the efforts we are putting in are not going to go to waste. Because by working closely with the cities, we are achieving enormous sustainability. We want the playgrounds and soccer fields to remain in good condition over the long term," explains Thon.

The participants and sponsors of the nationwide Gofus tournaments will not miss out on the fun. Thon: "It is always nice to meet up with old friends and talk to companions who used to feed you with flanks. One of these flanks beat Mathias Schipper. It has historical value, because Olaf Thon used it on May 2, 1984 to equalize 6:6 in the extension of the cup semi-final against FC Bayern Munich.
